Schisandra (Schisandra chinensis), known as "Wu Wei Zi" (Five Flavor Berry) in Chinese, is a unique adaptogenic berry that is simultaneously sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and pungent — the only herb in TCM pharmacopoeia said to contain all Five Flavors, each corresponding to a different organ system. The primary character of Wǔ Wèi Zǐ is astriction — it holds, preserves, and consolidates Jing, Qi, Body Fluids, and Shen that are "leaking" due to deficiency. When the body cannot hold its vitality — evident as night sweats, premature ejaculation, chronic diarrhea, chronic cough, or scattered mental focus — Schisandra seals these leakages. Schisandra Beauty and Brain Tonic: 1–2 ml tincture, 2 times daily. The sour taste is pronounced — can be taken in juice. For liver support, pair with milk thistle.
