Lilies

Lilies (Lilium species) have been revered across human civilizations for thousands of years — in ancient Egyptian medicine, Greek botanical writing, Chinese herbal texts, and Christian symbolism — as symbols of purity, renewal, and healing. In natural skincare, lily flower extracts contribute a delicate, luminous quality to formulations: skin-brightening, soothing, and deeply hydrating, with a tender floral character that speaks to the flower's universal association with grace and light.

Key Benefits of Lilies

  • Lily bulb extract contains polysaccharides and mucilages that provide exceptional skin hydration, film-forming moisture retention, and a uniquely silky skin feel.
  • Traditional Chinese medicine (Bai He) uses lily bulb as a cooling yin tonic for dry skin, respiratory conditions, and heat-related irritation — a botanical for restoring what has been depleted.
  • Contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity — supporting calm, even-toned, and healthy-looking skin.
  • Traditionally used in European folk cosmetics as a skin whitening and brightening agent — lily water preparations have been used since the Renaissance for a luminous complexion.
  • The delicate, powdery-floral scent of lily contributes a soft, elegant aromatic dimension to natural blends — ethereal, clean, and deeply beautiful.
  • Carries centuries of association with purity, renewal, and feminine grace — the symbolic resonance of lily enhances the sensory experience of any formulation it graces.
  • Its light, transparent character makes lily extracts ideal for brightening, hydrating, and calming formulations where a fresh, floral quality is desired.

Lilies bring a quality of light and delicacy to natural body care — hydrating, brightening, and beautifully aromatic. Their ancient pedigree as a healing and beautifying botanical connects modern formulations to one of humanity's oldest, most universal relationships with the plant world.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Perspective

Bǎi Hé (百合) — Lily Bulb — is one of TCM's most important herbs for nourishing Lung Yin, clearing residual Heat, and calming the Heart Spirit. It is the chief herb in Bǎi Hé Gù Jīn Tāng, one of the foundational formulas in TCM's emotional-respiratory medicine.

  • Chinese Name: Bai He (百合) — Lily Bulb
  • Nature & Flavor: Slightly Cold; Sweet, slightly Bitter
  • Meridians Entered: Heart, Lung
  • Key TCM Actions: Nourishes Lung Yin and moistens the Lung, clears residual Heat after febrile illness, calms the Heart Spirit and relieves vexation, treats the TCM pattern of "Lily Disease" (百合病 — a post-illness psycho-emotional syndrome).

Bai He is uniquely positioned at the intersection of physical and emotional healing in TCM. The condition "Lily Disease" (Bǎi Hé Bìng) — described in the Jin Gui Yao Lue (3rd century CE) — presents as unresolved fever with emotional instability, vacillating desire for food, and a restless, unsettled spirit. It reads remarkably like a classical description of chronic fatigue with anxiety, and Bai He remains the primary remedy. The lily flower itself is understood as an image of the Heart opening — gentle, luminous, and upward-directed.

Bai He (Lilium brownii and L. lancifolium bulb) is among the most studied TCM dietary therapy herbs for Lung-Heart Yin deficiency patterns manifesting as insomnia, residual cough, and anxiety. Lin et al. (2015) confirmed anti-inflammatory effects via regaloside B at the classical dose of 30 g fresh bulb (or 9–12 g dried) in congee. This rice-based preparation is also one of the oldest documented therapeutic foods in Chinese medicine — the porridge base is itself nourishing to Spleen Qi, which enhances absorption.

Bai He (Lily Bulb) Congee

  • 9–12 g dried Bai He (from a Chinese herb supplier) or 30 g fresh lily bulb, rinsed.
  • 50 g short-grain white rice (japonica) + 600 ml water.
  • Combine all ingredients, bring to boil, reduce to low simmer, cook 35–45 minutes until porridge consistency.
  • Add 5–7 dried goji berries (Gou Qi Zi) in the last 5 minutes.
  • Sweeten lightly with rock sugar or honey. Eat warm, ideally in the evening.

Research note: The lily bulb used medicinally is specifically Lilium brownii var. viridulum, L. lancifolium, or L. pumilum — not the ornamental Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum) or daylily. Verify species when purchasing. This congee formula appears in the Qing dynasty dietary therapy text Suishi Jinghua and is the original clinical delivery method for this herb.

Before you use this: Verify species before use: this recipe requires Lilium brownii, L. lancifolium, or L. pumilum (the TCM Bai He species). The Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum) is not the same plant and is highly toxic to cats and potentially problematic in large human doses. Daylilies (Hemerocallis spp.) are an entirely different genus. All three are visually similar — purchase only from a verified Chinese herb supplier with proper species labelling. Generally very safe at the recommended dose of 9–12 g dried or 30 g fresh.
