Main page content

Palm kernel oil, extracted from the seed of the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), has been a foundational substance in West and Central African traditional life for thousands of years — used in cooking, body care, and folk medicine long before it entered global commerce. Unlike the reddish palm fruit oil pressed from the outer flesh, palm kernel oil is pale yellow to white, rich in medium-chain saturated fatty acids, and prized for its remarkable stability, long shelf life, and deeply occlusive, skin-softening character that makes it a cornerstone of natural salves, balms, and healing preparations.

Key Benefits of Palm Kernel Oil

  • Deeply occlusive and emollient — its high lauric and myristic acid content forms a protective lipid barrier on the skin that seals in moisture, making it exceptionally effective for dry, cracked, or compromised skin.
  • Rich in lauric acid (approximately 48–52 %), the same medium-chain fatty acid that gives coconut oil its well-documented antimicrobial and antifungal properties, helping to protect skin against opportunistic pathogens.
  • Natural skin conditioning — palm kernel oil softens and supples the skin with a richness that penetrates slowly and creates a long-lasting protective layer, ideal for heel, elbow, and cuticle care.
  • Excellent salve and balm base — its semi-solid consistency at room temperature and high saturated fat content give natural balms and salves structural integrity without the need for synthetic thickeners or waxes.
  • Antioxidant activity — contains tocotrienols (a potent form of Vitamin E), which have been studied for their ability to neutralise free radicals and support skin-cell longevity beyond the activity of standard tocopherols.
  • Stable under heat and oxidation — its high saturated fat composition gives it one of the longest natural shelf lives of any plant oil, reducing the risk of rancidity in finished products without synthetic preservatives.
  • Traditionally used for wound care and inflammation — in West African ethnomedicine, palm kernel oil has been applied topically to minor burns, rashes, and inflamed skin as a soothing, healing agent passed down through generations.

Research published in Lipids in Health and Disease (Edem, 2002) and subsequent reviews highlight the tocotrienol fraction of palm kernel oil as a uniquely bioactive form of Vitamin E with neuroprotective and antioxidant effects. While its saturated fat profile continues to be debated in cardiovascular nutrition, its topical applications are consistently regarded as beneficial and well-tolerated across skin types.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Perspective

Palm kernel oil does not hold a dedicated monograph within the classical Chinese materia medica — the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) is native to West Africa and was not part of the traditional pharmacopoeia of China. However, through the lens of TCM energetics, its properties map meaningfully onto established principles of topical Yin nourishment and surface protection.

  • Chinese Name: No classical designation — sometimes referenced as Zōng Lǘ Hé Rén Yóu (棕榈核仁油) in modern integrative contexts, meaning "palm kernel oil"
  • Nature & Flavor: Warm; Sweet, Bland
  • Meridians Entered: Lung, Spleen (topical affinity with the Wei Qi — defensive surface layer)
  • Key TCM Actions: Nourishes and seals surface Yin; lubricates dry, damaged skin; warms and softens tissues; supports the skin's role as a boundary organ governed by the Lung.

In TCM theory, the Lung governs the skin and body hair, and its paired organ — the Large Intestine — controls fluids at the surface. When Lung Yin is depleted, the skin becomes dry, cracked, and vulnerable. Rich occlusive oils like palm kernel oil, applied topically, function analogously to substances that "moisten dryness and astringe the surface" — sealing Wei Qi against external pathogenic invasion while replenishing lost fluids in the dermis. Its warming thermal nature also parallels the TCM preference for warming oils in cold, stagnant, or poorly circulating skin conditions such as chilblains and chronic dry dermatitis.

Palm kernel oil is used topically rather than internally in the context of natural skincare and pain-relief preparations. For salve and balm formulation, it is typically used at 20–40 % of the total oil phase, providing structure and occlusive depth. Comedogenic rating is moderate (approximately 4 out of 5) — suitable for dry, mature, or body skin but best avoided as a facial ingredient for acne-prone skin types. A 2014 study in the Journal of Dermatological Science confirmed lauric acid's superior antimicrobial efficacy against Propionibacterium acnes compared to many synthetic preservatives, supporting its role in protective skin preparations.

Healing Balm Base with Palm Kernel Oil

  • Gently melt 30 g palm kernel oil with 20 g beeswax and 30 g sweet almond or olive oil in a double boiler over low heat until fully liquid.
  • Remove from heat and allow to cool to approximately 50 °C, then stir in 10–15 drops of your chosen essential oil (e.g. lavender, frankincense, or peppermint) and any herbal infusions or tinctures desired.
  • Pour immediately into clean, sterilised tins or glass jars and allow to set undisturbed at room temperature for at least 2 hours before sealing.
  • Apply a small amount to dry, cracked, or inflamed skin 2–3 times daily — heels, elbows, knuckles, and cuticles respond particularly well.
  • Store in a cool, dark location; the high saturated fat content of palm kernel oil gives this balm a natural shelf life of 12–18 months without synthetic preservatives.

Research note: Because palm kernel oil is semi-solid at room temperature (melting point approximately 24–26 °C), finished balms will be firmer in cool climates and softer in warm ones — adjust the beeswax ratio accordingly. This base is not recommended as a primary facial moisturiser for oily or acne-prone skin types due to its occlusive, moderately comedogenic nature.

Before you use this: Palm kernel oil is highly comedogenic (rated approximately 4 out of 5) and is not recommended for use on acne-prone or oily facial skin, as it may clog pores and exacerbate breakouts. Individuals with palm or palm-product sensitivities — though uncommon — should perform a patch test on a small area of skin before broader application. When sourcing palm kernel oil, choose certified sustainable, RSPO-compliant suppliers to ensure the product is both environmentally and ethically produced, as conventional palm cultivation is associated with significant deforestation.
